My favorite Italian restaurant in Chiang Mai: Why Not

It is not easy to find a good Italian restaurant in Asia. To my amazement I found a very good one in Chiang Mai, it is called Why Not and is located in Nimman area. I visited several times during my time in Chiang Mai at the beginning of 2020.

The visit(s)

The restaurant is located in Soi Nimman 13 (see picture above), but there is an entrance also from Soi Nimman 11 where there is a garden with al fresco dining. The place is usually busy for dinner, but I never had a problem finding a table.

The indoor dining room is modern and comfortable.

What I immediately loved about the restaurant was the display with Italian cheese and cold cuts (and some French and Spanish). That was an amazing selection, including many kinds of cold cuts that have seldom seen outside Italy, like Lardo di Colonnata, Strolghino, Soppressata… And you can order individual items in 30 grams or 100 grams portions.

The beauty above was a selection of coppa d testa (100 grams) and lardo di Colonnata (30 grams).

In my first visit I had their standard cheese and cold cuts platter that was fully satisfying: ham, mortadella, various kinds of salami, three types of cheese and even some olives made this platter suitable for three people. Very good value by the way.

On this occasion I also had another tasty appetizer, sausage with red wine sauce.

I tried many pasta dishes over several visits and they are all excellent and generously sized. In the picture above you can see the “fusillotti piccanti” a type of pasta with spicy sausage.

I finished with a iced-shaken ice cream. This was a bit under my expectations (maybe I picked the wrong flavor, I think there was some misunderstanding), but the other desserts are all great, I recommend the tiramisu and the chocolate mousse.

On another occasion I tried the classic carbonara that was really authentic.

The pappardelle (wide pasta) with duck ragout that I had on another occasion have my recommendation.

And I had a veal scaloppina with ham. This dish was also a bit under my expectations, but something to enjoy as not easy to find outside Italy.

I have been back so many times and always found new delicious dishes. Some home run were found in the “specials” list, for example a pasta with burrata and sausage (picture above) or an oven-cooked codfish. Also their pizza is legit, but it did not impress me.

The check(s)

The first check for what was a massive dinner was 1043 THB (33 USD). Considering just the cheese and cold cut platter, this was good value for money.

A check for a pasta and a “secondo” (meat dish) was 620 THB (around 20 USD). Again, I cannot complain about the check. And you are in Nimman, one of the most expensive areas in Chiang Mai.

Michelin-recommended khao soi in Chiang Mai

In 2019 the Thailand Michelin Guide (2020 edition) covered Chiang Mai for the first time listing 50 restaurants either as “tables” (a generic good meal) or “Bib Gourmands” (great value, up to 1000 THB). There were no stars. Four of them were joints specializing in Khao Soi, the quintessential Northern curry noodles. I visited them between January and February 2020. Here’s my take. (I will not bother to distinguish between “tables” and “Bib Gourmands” since the distinction as far as Chiang Mai is concerned makes little sense).

The gentrified one: Khao Soi Nimman

Nimman is the posh area of Chiang Mai, a sort of gentrified entertainment district, so no surprise that the eponymous Khao Soi Nimman offers a sanitized version of a classic khao soi diner.

One upside is the menu offering the noodles with a variety of toppings not normally available (the big ones are usually chicken, beef, and pork). I had one with a Northern Thai sausage. The sausage was really good, but the curry sauce and the noodles were just bland. The restaurant also offers other dishes; the Thai omelette with minced pork I tried was fluffy and a very good specimen of this ubiquitous Thai dish.

This khao soi was 105 THB (3.30 USD). Still cheap, but almost twice as much the price in conventional joints.

Address in Chiang Mai: 22 Nimmana Haeminda Rd Lane 7.

The thick one: Khao Soi Mae Manee

Khao Soi Mae Manee is located a few kilometers North of the Old City. It is a 10 minute drive and it is totally worth.

It is located in a shack in the middle of a residential area. It is clearly a family-run eatery. In my visits I could identify both locals and tourists. Their bowls come in normal and big size (in the picture the normal size is light blue and the big one is white).

Their broth is very thick and delicious. Also the beef and the chicken are super-tender. The big bowl carries more meat. You can choose among various meats, including pork intestine and sausage. In my big bowl I mixed beef and chicken. I also appreciated the generous amount of pickles (most people put them in the bowl, I like them as a separate snack).

A standard bowl with one meat cost just 40/50 THB, the big one with two meats was 120 THB.

Address in Chiang Mai: 18 Chotana Rd, Chang Phueak.

The temple one: Khao Soi Samoe Chai

Khao Soi Samoe Chai (sometimes spelled Samer Jai) is located next to Wat Fa Ham (if you have trouble finding it on the map, just look up for Fa Ham or Faham temple). It is a large restaurant and offers a lot of dishes besides khao soi.

I had the chicken khao soi and I was a bit disappointed. The chicken leg was not as tender as in other joints and the curry soup was less tasty. One characteristic of this khao soi was the relatively thick fried noodles (fried noodles are always on top of a khao soi bowl by the way).

I also tried other dishes, including grilled chicken, and I was not particularly happy (it came half-cold). Also, their keeping the food on display in the kiosks throughout the restaurant does not seem very hygienic.

The khao soi is 50-60 THB.

Address in Chiang Mai: 391 Moo 2, Charoenrat Road.

The balanced one: Khao Soi Lambduan

Also located on Charoenrat Road, not far away from Khao Soi Samoe Chai, Khai Soi Lambduan came up in some discussions with locals apart than from the Michelin Guide. It occupies a fairly large shack without any English sign; they have a handy picture menu with English translation.

The best feature of this Khao Soi was the drumtick: a falling-off-the-bone type of drumstick that was really satisfying. It appears that they cook different meats in separate pots with the sauce and this helps. Overall, it was a well-balanced soup, not too spicy.

The Khao Soi is priced 50-60 THB.

Address in Chiang Mai: 352/22 Charoenrat Road.

A little charming chocolate cafe in Chiang Mai: Khom Chocolate House

Chiang Mai has a love affair with chocolate. One of its manifestation is a charming cafe called Khom Chocolate House.

The visit

The cafe occupies a small house in a quiet street of the Old Town (North Western quadrant). Half of the space is the baking space and half is customer space. Everything is well organized.

Water and wifi are available for customers free of charge.

And a few gift sets are for sale.

But their specialty is fresh drinks and baked products. I had their triple shot with cold chocolate from dark, milk, and white bars. It was very nice to go through the variation of the three shots.

But they have also creative beverages like the chocolate “Margarita” shown above made out of French dark chocolate.

I also tried the Thai cold chocolate that had a fruity background.

Their chocolate mousse cake was excellent (from Belgian chocolate).

Finally I tried their home made bonbons. The orange chocolate and the “sweetheart” (the one heart-shaped in the picture) with a hint of liquor were my favorite.

Everything in the shop is made by the owner, Ms Khom.

The check

During my first visit I had two drinks and they cost me 210 THB (6.75 USD). Very reasonable.

A chocolate drink and the cake cost me 224 THB (7.20 USD).

The bonbons cost 35 THB each (1.15 USD).

I liked everything about this experience. The drinks were cleverly designed, the cakes and the bonbons were exquisite, and the environment was very warm. It deserves a mention in my list of my favorite chocolate cafes in Asia.
